BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--- The UAB softball team (1-2, C-USA 0-0) left seven players on base en route to a 2-0 loss to Mississippi State (4-4, 0-0 SEC) here Wednesday.
"Kerri Foster pitched a good enough game for us to win, we just didn't show up with the bats," said UAB head coach Marla Townsend.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning and never looked back.
The Blazers had the chance to take the lead in the second inning when Kris Lara, Kristin Stanfill and Amanda Ellis all singled to load the bases, but the Blazers left all three players stranded.
In the fourth inning the Blazers had a chance to get back in the game when Lara notched her second single of the day and Ellis reached on an error. Freshman Amanda Byrne singled through the left side to advance the runners. Stanfill then reached on a fielder's choice, but for the second time in the game, all three players were left on base.
In the seventh inning, Mississippi State added another run to the scoreboard when Jennifer Waterman was hit by a pitch and the Bulldogs followed with three singles. Lindsay Nelson recorded her first RBI during the game, increasing the State lead to 2-0.
The Blazers had their final chance in the seventh inning to get back into the game, but went three and out in the final inning.
Senior Kerri Foster took the loss for the Blazers after pitching seven innings, giving up six hits, two runs (one earned) and struck out six.
The Blazers hit the road for the OU/NIKE Tournament February 14-16, but will be back at home on February 19, to face Georgia State in a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
