BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- Playing through difficult weather conditions, the UAB women's golf team is in second place after competing in the first round of the Southern Shootout here Monday.
The Blazers carded a first-round score of 334, 12 shots behind leader Jacksonville State which fired a 322 at the par-72, 5,807-yard Founders Course at the Greystone Country Club. Brooke Mangan, from Mornington, Australia, shot a 77 on the day and was one of only five golfers to break 80 among the 71 competitors Monday.
"The conditions were cold and wet," said UAB head coach Kim Wilcox, "but considering it was our first tournament of the season, I thought we got off to a good start. I was real proud of the way the team played."
Mangan's 77 is three shots behind individual leader Marilen Ruiz of Jacksonville State heading into Tuesday's final round. Mangan is tied with Birmingham-Southern's Shelley McGraw.
In the team standings, UAB is five shots ahead of Southern Mississippi's 339. Troy State is in fourth place at 341, followed by Tennessee Tech (344), Birmingham-Southern (350), Gardner-Webb (354) and South Alabama (354).
The other Blazers competing are Fort Payne, Ala. native Jenni Elmore, who shot an 85, Liz Schweihs (Lockport, Ill.) and Janey Deimling (Vancouver, British Columbia) who each shot 86s on the day. Katie Kane shot a 93 in the opening round.
