UAB Softball Sweeps Georgia State

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.---Senior Kerri Foster tied the UAB softball record of 14 strikeouts in a single game to help the Blazers to a sweep of Georgia State here Wednesday.
The Blazers (6-3) rallied to defeat the visiting Panthers, 2-1, in the first game before posting a 3-0 shutout in game two.
In game one, Foster (4-1) threw all seven inning, facing 25 batters, giving up one hit, no walks and striking out 14 batters. Foster's outstanding pitching performance comes less than a week after receiving C-USA Pitcher of the Week honors.
In the fourth inning, Georgia State put up the first score of the game on the board when Sara Berzopsky tripled and scored on a bunt by Meghan McCoy, making the score 1-0.
In the sixth inning, the Blazers rallied for their only runs of the game when Kristin Stanfill doubled. Candice Hithe followed by reaching on an error by third base and advancing to second, while Stanfill scored on the error, tying the game. Cliffanie Engram grounded out to second base and drove in Hithe, giving the Blazers the 2-1 lead.
The Blazers held off Georgia State in the seventh inning, securing the 2-1 victory.
UAB jumped out to an early lead in the second game when Kris Lara doubled and advanced to third on Carrie Christophel's single. Amanda Byrne then reached on an error by the short-stop allowing Lara to score on the same play, giving the Blazers the 1-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, Kelli Thompson doubled and was replaced on second base by pinch runner Chelsea McCall. McCall was driven in on Lara's first home run of the year, securing the lead at 3-0.
In the seventh inning, freshman Jennifer McClure replaced Thompson on the mound to finish the game, recording two strikeouts and her first career save.
Thompson pitched the first six innings of the game, giving up three hits and striking out four.
UAB travels to Waco, Texas this weekend to play in the Compass Bank Invitational hosted by Baylor University. The Blazers' first action in the tournament will come Friday when they face Louisiana Tech at 11:00 a.m.
