Women's Tennis Beats Cincinnati, 4-3

CINCINNATI, Ohio ----- The UAB women's tennis team (4-3, 2-1) defeated the Bearcats of Cincinnati, 4-3, in a close match, on Sunday.
"This was a very close match and I'm happy that we pulled it out," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "Our players really battled in this one. I think our conditioning was the difference. After playing a strong Memphis team on Saturday, we had several long, close matches today. We never got tired or lost focus. I'm really proud of that."
The Blazers took the doubles point, winning the No. 1 and No. 3 matches. UAB's Natascha Immele and Ornischa Maier-Knapp defeated UC's Lyndsey Molony and Khushchehr Italia, 9-7, in the No. 1 spot. Blazers Julia Hoch and Nadia Dellarciprete were victorious over Cincinnati's Julie Klauck and Samantha Liu, 9-7, in the No. 3 doubles match. In the second slot, Cristina Reyes and Jen Capuzzi of UC defeated UAB's Femke de Boer and Yvonne Ernst, 8-5.
UAB and Cincinnati split the singles matches, with the Blazers winning at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 positions. UAB's de Boer won in the No. 1 match, defeating Bearcat Molony, 7-5, 7-6. de Boer is now 2-0 in her career at the No. 1 position. In the No. 2 spot, UC's Capuzzi fell to Blazer Immele, in a tough three set match, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3. UAB's Dellarciprete recorded a come-from-behind victory for the Blazers at the No. 6 position over Cincinnati's Liu. Liu took the first set, 7-5, but Dellarciprete was undeterred, winning the second set, 6-3, before taking the third set, 6-2.
In the third slot, Bearcat Reyes defeated UAB's Ernst, 6-3, 6-0. At the No. 4 position, Blazer Maier-Knapp lost a tough three-set match to UC's Italia, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6. Finally, in the No. 5 match, Cincinnati's Jill Klauck beat UAB's Hoch, 6-4, 6-2.
UAB takes a nine-day break before hosting Jacksonville State on Tuesday, March 4, at 1:30 p.m. at Brook Highland Racquet Club.
