AUBURN, Ala.---Pitcher Kerri Foster allowed just two hits and the UAB softball team got a pair of homeruns as the Blazers posted a 4-0 shutout over in-state foe Auburn here Tuesday.
The UAB victory was the second for the Blazers in five meetings with the Tigers.
"From the second we stepped off the bus I knew the girls came to play," said UAB head coach Marla Townsend. "Not only was it a huge win, but it helped build our confidence as we head into this weekend's tournament in Utah," said Townsend. "It also proved that when we play as a team, we have no limits."
UAB (9-6) put their first two runs on the scoreboard in the second inning when Kelli Thompson singled and scored on Amanda Ellis' first homerun of the year, giving the Blazers the 2-0 lead.
For the second time in the game, the Blazers rallied with two outs in the sixth inning when Cliffanie Engram reached on a single and stole second base. Thompson then blasted her first homerun of the year, the second two-run shot of the day for the Blazers, increasing the UAB lead to 4-0.
Foster, who improved her record to 7-2 on the season with the win, held Auburn (11-12) scoreless in all seven innings and struck out five batters.
UAB hits the road on February 28-March 2 to take part in the Red Desert Classic hosted by the University of Utah. The Blazers are scheduled to play Southern Utah, Utah, BYU, Utah State and Oregon
