UAB Softball Defeats In-Town Rival Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.---UAB's Kelli Thompson threw a one-hitter against in-town rival Samford in the Blazers 1-0 victory, here Tuesday.
"Not only was it a big win for us because Kelli Thompson threw a one-hitter against a quality hitting team, but it also get's us back on track going into the DePaul series this weekend," said UAB's head coach Marla Townsend.
"All in all, I am very pleased and ready to get our first win over DePaul this weekend."
The Blazers (16-12, 1-2 C-USA) scored their only run of the game in the third inning when Candice Hithe reached on an error by the Bulldogs first baseman, Deanna Resmondo and advanced to second on the throw. Cliffanie Engram notched her 20th RBI of the season when she doubled and brought Hithe across the plate, giving UAB the 1-0 lead.
Samford (14-7) rallied in the fifth inning and loaded the bases, but Thompson got the Blazers out of the jam when she struck out Sarah Godfrey for the final out of the inning.
UAB held off Samford in the remaining two innings to secure the 1-0 victory over the Bulldogs.
Thompson picked up her sixth win against Samford after allowing only one Bulldog hit and striking out nine batters, bringing her overall strike out total this season to 45.
Thompson and the Blazers will be back in action Friday, March 21 as they play host to C-USA foe DePaul starting at 6 p.m. at George Ward Park.
