UAB Softball Drops Two At Houston

HOUSTON -----The UAB softball team dropped two games, 4-3 and 10-0, to Conference USA rival Houston, here Saturday.
The Cougars' Michelle Keith hit the game-winning home run in the sixth inning to clinch the 5-4 victory in the first game.
In the first game of the day for UAB, the Blazers (21-22, 6-11 C-USA) rallied in the fourth inning when Beth Mullins singled through the left side and advanced to second on a Kris Lara sacrifice bunt. Mullins advanced to third when Cliffanie Engram singled through the right side to put the UAB base runners at first and third. Kelli Thompson then stepped up to the plate and crushed a three-run shot over the left center field wall, giving the Blazers the 3-0 lead.
The Cougars (28-17, 10-4 C-USA) battled back in the fourth inning when Arelis Ferreris hit a home run over left center field wall, bringing the score to 3-1. Houston scored another run in the fourth inning when Michelle Whipple reached on an error. Whipple scored when Lindsay Durham reached on an error, bringing the Blazer lead to within one. During the attempt to make a play on Durham's hit, UAB's Sara Christophel and Candice Hithe collided in shallow, left centerfield, both players were taken out of the game due to injuries.
Houston added another run in the fifth inning when Kristen Glouacz homered to left center field, tying the game at 3-3.
The Cougars took the lead in the sixth inning when Michelle Keith hit her third home run of the season over the left center field wall, giving Houston the 4-3 lead.
Houston held off the Blazers for one more inning to hold onto the 4-3 victory in the first game of the day.
In the second game of the day, Houston took the early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Kim Nesloney and Kristen Glowacz both drew walks. Jenilee Skender then reached on a fielder's choice and Nesloney scored when Arelis Ferreris flied out to center field.
Houston added two more runs in the third inning when Nesloney walked and Glowacz smashed a home run over the center field wall, giving the Cougars the 3-0 lead.
The Cougars kept the momentum rolling in the fourth inning when Michelle Whipple walked and advanced to second when Lindsay Durham laid down a sac bunt. When Jaci Gonzalez singled, Whipple scored as UAB's Kerri Foster overthrew first base on the play, giving Houston the 4-0 lead.
Houston scored again in the fifth inning when Ferreris singled and scored when Jeanie Davis hit her ninth home run of the season, bringing the Cougar lead to 6-0. Whipple reached on a fielder's choice and scored on an error by UAB catcher, Amanda Ellis. Durham and followed with a single and Nesloney reached on a walk. Glowacz then smashed her second home run of the game, giving Houston the 10-0 victory in five innings.
The Blazers and Cougars will be back in action Sunday to play the final game of the three-game series starting at 1 p.m.
