STARKVILLE, Miss.---The UAB softball team got outstanding pitching from Kerri Foster and Kelli Thompson here Tuesday en route to a 3-0 victory over Mississippi State.
The UAB win avenged an earlier 2-0 loss to the Bulldogs back on February 12 in Birmingham.
The Blazers (24-23, 6-12 C-USA) swung the bats well early, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Amanda Byrne and Kristin Stanfill both reached on singles through the right side. Both Byrne and Stanfill advanced a base when Chelsea McCall laid down a sacrifice bunt. Byrne then scored when Cliffanie Engram singled to center field, notching her 24th RBI of the season.
The Blazers kept their momentum going in the third inning when Kelli Thompson singled to left center field and Kris Lara singled through the right side. Byrne then followed with her second single of the day to load the bases. The Blazers added its second run of the game when Stanfill drew a walk with the bases loaded and Thompson scored on the play. McCall was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Lara scored, giving UAB the 3-0 lead.
The Bulldogs (31-25, 11-15 SEC) rallied in the fourth inning when Krystal Tillman, Jennifer Nelson and Kate Jaspers all reached on bunt singles to load the bases. The Blazers got out of the inning when Tillman was called out at home on a fielder's choice and Blaire Brown popped up to short stop.
UAB shut down the Bulldogs and held them scoreless in the remaining three innings to hold onto the 3-0 victory. Foster evened her record at 12-12 as she scattered seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. Thompson came on in the sixth and picked up her second save on the season.
UAB will be back in action this weekend as it travels to Charlotte to take on the 49ers in a three-game Conference USA series. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
