TAMPA, Fla. ----- UAB golfer Brooke Mangan was selected third-team All-Conference USA by a vote of the league's head coaches, Conference USA officials announced here Wednesday. Mangan finished in a tie for fourth overall at the 2003 women's golf championship, only two strokes behind the tournament's individual winner.
"I think it is a fantastic Brooke received this award and I am very happy for her," UAB head coach Kim Wilcox said. "She played solid for us all season and is really deserving of this honor."
Mangan has led the Lady Blazers throughout the season. Entering the 2003 C-USA championship, Mangan averaged a 76.66 per round, by far the lowest per-round average on the team. Including the C-USA championship, she has seven top-10 finishes in 12 events this season, highlighted by a second-place finish at the Edwin Watts Classic on March 2. Mangan's low round of the season and her career was a 70 at the John Kirk/Lady Panther Invitational on October 30, 2002.
During the conference tournament, Mangan was battling for the individual championship throughout, as she was trailing the leaders by only two strokes entering Wednesday's final round and fired a 74 to finish in a fourth-place tie. With the fourth-place finish, Mangan will make her first-ever trip to the NCAA Regionals next week.
This is the second time in two years the Mornington, Australia native received an all-conference honor. Last season, Mangan was named to the C-USA all-freshman team.
