Blazer Softball Drops A Pair To Southern Miss

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.---The UAB softball team was shutout in a pair games by Southern Mississippi, 1-0 and 2-0, here Saturday.
In game one, Southern Miss (27-27, 12-11 C-USA) put the first runs on the scoreboard in the third inning when Heather Bell reached on a walk and scored when Auriel Jenkins singled up the middle, giving the Golden Eagles the 1-0 lead.
The Blazers (27-26, 9-14 C-USA) looked to score in the fifth inning when Amanda Byrne was hit by a pitch. Andrea Pierson entered the game to pinch run for Byrne and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kristin Stanfill. Chelsea McCall then laid down the second sacrifice bunt of the inning to advance Pierson to third. The Golden Eagles got out of the jam when Cliffanie Engram grounded out to third base to end the inning.
UAB was held scoreless all seven innings as Golden Eagle Jessica Holaway held the Blazers to one hit in the 1-0 Southern Miss victory.
For the Blazers, Kerri Foster struck out 11 batters and gave up five hits, evening her record at 13-13 on the season.
In the second game of the day, Southern Miss put up two runs in the fourth inning when Sarah Boyd drew a walk and Ashley Davis smashed her second home run of the season over the left field wall to take the 2-0 lead.
For the second time of the day, the Blazers were held scoreless in all seven innings. UAB notched four hits and stranded four runners on base in the 2-0 shutout thrown by Southern Miss pitcher Danielle Hatfield.
In other action around the conference on Saturday, ECU defeated Saint Louis in a pair of games, 2-1 and 2-1. As a result, if UAB defeats Southern Miss on Sunday and ECU defeats Saint Louis in the final game of the series, the Blazers will capture a C-USA tournament berth.
The Blazers and Golden Eagles will finish the three-game series on Sunday, as UAB honors its four seniors: Engram, Candice Hithe, Foster and Kelli Thompson, starting at 1 p.m.
