TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - UAB (5-9) fell to Alabama 30-19, 30-27, 30-25 in volleyball action Saturday afternoon at the Crimson Tide Invitational hosted on the University of Alabama campus. The Blazers finished third at the tournament, Alabama (5-6) won the tournament championship, Jacksonville State was the runner-up and Georgia Southern finished fourth.
Senior outside hitter Martina Shields had 12 points on 12 kills to go along with nine digs to lead the Blazers. Senior middle blocker Karen Boyd added 10 points on eight kills and two total blocks and freshman setter Jenna Link posted 24 assists for UAB.
"We played good volleyball today, but just had too many errors to beat a quality team like Alabama," said UAB head coach Melinda Claiborne. "I thought we came in with a good gameplan, but we just didn't get good execution. Overall, I was pleased with our effort."
Senior opposite hitter Jennifer Bibber led Alabama, recording a double-double with 22 points on 19 kills and 11 digs while hitting for .444. Senior opposite hitter/setter Erin Price added 40 assists for the Crimson Tide.
Boyd was named to the all-tournament team after recording double digits in points in all three matches over the weekend and posting eight total blocks.
UAB next returns home to Bartow Arena to host the UAB Invitational Friday-Saturday. Friday, UAB faces Mercer at 7 p.m. and Saturday, the Blazers take on in-state rival Alabama A&M at 7 p.m.
