UAB Volleyball Team Beaten By Marquette, 3-0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB volleyball team was defeated by Conference USA opponent Marquette, 3-0, here on Saturday evening. The Golden Eagles beat UAB, 30-15, 30-18 and 30-19.
"We played a very good team tonight," said UAB head coach Melinda Claiborne. "Marquette is a seasoned team and they were too much for our young team. I was pleased with Isabel Oquendo's performance tonight. We've been asking her to step up and she did that in this match."
UAB (1-17, 0-6) was led by Isabel Oquendo's 13 kills and .462 hitting percentage. Jenna Link tallied 26 set assists as well, while Cassi Ociesa had 27 total attacks. Kaitlyn Filar recorded 15 total attacks for the Blazers.
Marquette (13-5, 3-2) was led by Jamie Mueller's 14 kills and 30 total attacks. Additionally, Mueller contributed a .367 hitting percentage and two block assists. Sarah Vernon had 37 set assists in the match for the Golden Eagles.
In game one, Marquette tallied a .355 hitting percentage, as they recorded 15 kills and 31 total attacks for the 30-15 victory. Erica Heisser and Mueller each had four kills, with Heisser recording four block assists as well. Oquendo had four kills and a .667 hitting percentage for the Blazers.
Marquette took game two, 30-18, registering 21 team kills. Oquendo led the Blazers once again with four kills, while Filar tallied 10 total attacks. Marquette's Mueller led the Golden Eagles with six kills and 11 total attacks in the game.
The Blazers had their best-hitting game in game three, but could not tally a win, as they fell, 30-19. UAB recorded 11 kills and 40 total attacks, but Marquette answered with a .340 hitting percentage. UAB's Oquendo tallied five more kills and hit .364 in the game, while Link contributed 11 set assists to the cause as well. Theresa Coughlin had five kills and eight total attacks for Marquette.
UAB next travels to Tampa, Fla., to face USF on Oct. 22 at 7:00 p.m. (ET).
