STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. - Brooke Mangan fired a one-under-par 71 and finished the tournament there to take home individual medalist honors at the John Kirk/Lady Panther Invitational Tuesday morning at the par-72, 5,842-yard Eagles Landing Country Club. It is Mangan's first title of the 2004-05 season and second of her career.
"Brooke played exceptional golf yesterday and today," UAB head coach Kim Wilcox said. "She is our leader and we need her to play well. Our team scores were fantastic and we put some pressure on the teams ahead of us. Overall, trimming 11 shots off our fall average a year ago is exciting for our spring prospects."
UAB placed third in the team standings, but just eight shots behind Campbell, which won the tournament with team rounds of 301 and 297. Host Georgia State was second with a 294-309=603. UAB's rounds of 302 and 304 put the Blazers three shots ahead of Yale and four in front of Middle Tennessee State in the 11-team field. In-state rival Jacksonville State finished 11th after rounds of 324 and 316. Conference USA rival Southern Miss placed ninth in the team race, some 21 shots behind UAB.
Other Blazers contributing to the team finish besides Mangan included Janey Deimling, whose back-to-back 75s were good enough for a tie for 10th place overall. Martha Hudson fired rounds of 76-79 to card a 155 and finish in a tie for 22nd. Elizabeth Schweihs (79-79=158, T-31st) and Kelli Cassidy (85-85=170, T-56th) also competed for the Blazers.
The tournament wrapped up fall play for Wilcox's club. The team finished an average of 11-shots better per round that a year ago, signifying marked improvement for a team which placed tied for sixth in last season's Conference USA championships.
UAB takes the winter months off before they return to action at the Birmingham-Southern-hosted Buffalo Rock Southern Shootout, Feb. 28 and March 1 at Bent Brook Golf Course in nearby McCalla, Ala.
