The UAB cross country team travels to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the NCAA South Region Championship on Nov. 13.
The women's meet starts at 10 a.m. at Harry Pritchett Golf Course. They will compete over a 6K course, which has been revamped as a true cross country course since the closing of the golf club last year. This meet is the gateway to the NCAA Championships, with the top two teams advancing along with the top four individuals not on an advancing team. In addition to the 18 automatic team berths from the nine regionals, there are 13 at-large team bids as well.
Last season, UAB finished in a tie for 11th at the championship. Amanda Kara completed her UAB career leading the Blazers with a 31st place finish, her best-ever finish at a regional.
UAB is coming off a third-place finish at the 2004 Conference USA Championships on Oct. 30, the best finish in Blazer history at the Conference USA championships. Elizabeth Ambrus was UAB's top-finisher, placing third in the 6K race, while Elizabeth Hilligoss tallied a seventh-place finish. UAB's other freshman, Whitney Mays, placed 27th, while sophomores Jennifer Thompson and Ryanne Fortney finished 30th and 32nd, respectively. UAB's final two finishers were Petra Ivanova, who placed 38th and Genoah Collins, who finished in 47th place. The Blazers recorded 101 points in the contest, finishing only eight points behind second-place TCU's 93 points. Marquette repeated as champion with 66 points in the meet.
