CALERA, Ala.----- Junior Brooke Mangan captured her first career tournament title here Tuesday, winning the Up the Creek/Applebee's Samford Intercollegiate Golf Tournament at the Timberline Golf Club. Mangan, who won the medallist honors after a one-hole playoff, fired a total score of 149 (71-78) in the two-day event.
As a team, the Lady Blazers finished third overall in the 18-team field with a 622. UAB finished with a 309 on the afternoon, four strokes below Monday's team score of 313. Jacksonville State finished nine strokes ahead of the Lady Blazers to win the team event with a score of 613 (309-304).
"This is a great honor for Brooke," UAB women's golf coach Kim Wilcox said. "She was able to battle through some tough holes and pull it out in the playoff hole. As a team, I am happy with this performance and hopefully we will be able to gather some momentum heading into April."
Mangan was not the only Lady Blazer who performed well. Liz Schweihs finished in the top five, tying for fifth overall with a 152 (80-72). Sophomore Janey Deimling finished in a tie for 32nd overall with a 161 (80-81), while senior Katie Kane (81-83/164) and freshman Kelli Cassidy (87-79/166) finished in ties for 44th and 50th, respectively.
