Softball Falls On The Road Against Mississippi State, 7-0

STARKVILLE, Miss. --- The UAB softball team fell prey to a five-run inning against Mississippi State for a second-consecutive game on Wednesday as the Blazers were defeated in the final contest of a home-and-home series versus the Bulldogs, 7-0, here at the MSU Softball Field.
UAB (16-34) dropped its 16th-straight game of the season on Wednesday and lost its sixth-consecutive non-conference matchup. With the victory, Mississippi State (35-22) extended its winning streak to seven-consecutive games and improved its record to 11-1 in its previous 12 contests.
The Blazers' Beth Mullins and Amanda Ellis registered UAB's two hits in the game. Mullins, the Blazers' senior from Fairhope, singled in the first inning, while Ellis lined a double down the right-field line in the top of the fifth frame. Mullins is currently second on the team with a .297 batting average on the season.
Mississippi State opened the scoring in Wednesday's non-conference matchup as the Bulldogs pushed across five runs in the bottom of the third inning to take an early 5-0 lead. In the frame, MSU's Kate Jaspers reached on an error and scored when Jennifer Waterman hit her fifth home run of the season. Waterman, a native of Kingwood, Texas, went 1-for-3 with two RBI's and a run scored.
The Bulldogs' Callye Williams, Iyhia McMichael and Jaspers also earned RBI's in the third inning. Williams, Mississippi State's starting shortstop scored Blaire Brown from third base with a sacrifice fly to right field, while McMichael and Jaspers drove in runs by drawing bases on balls.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Mississippi State tacked on a pair of runs to increase its lead to 7-0. Williams tripled and scored in the frame to plate the Bulldogs' sixth run of the evening, while McMichael singled to right field to drive in Katie Cooley. McMichael, Mississippi State's All-American from Nacogdoches, Texas, went 2-for-3 with two RBI's on Wednesday.
UAB only allowed one earned run against the Bulldogs, but committed four errors. Senior pitcher Tara Higashino took the loss for the Blazers as she gave up one run on five hits in 2.1 innings in the circle. Mississippi State's Kelli Miller improved to 9-8 on the season with the win.
The UAB softball team will next be in action on Saturday as the Blazers resume their Conference USA schedule against the Saint Louis Billikens in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at George Ward Park. The two-game matchup is being tabbed as Diamond Club Appreciation Day and admission is free to all UAB home softball games.
