STARKVILLE, Miss --- The UAB volleyball team was defeated by Mississippi State, 3-0, here on Tuesday night at the Newell-Grissom Building.
"We've faced a lot of adversity this season," said UAB head coach Melinda Claiborne. "However, our team has matured and grown from this experience. Tonight, we struggled offensively. We need to get better production, especially from our hitters."
UAB (0-9) dropped the first two games, 30-12 and 30-13, but battled tough in the third game, before falling 30-28. The Blazers got five-kill performances from freshman middle blocker Nicole Bowland and freshman outside hitter Shaniquwa Cooper and a two-kill, six-block effort from sophomore middle blocker Cassi Ociesa. Sophomore libero Brianna Galvin contributed 13 kills to the cause.
The Bulldogs were led by junior outside hitter Orshi Kriegel's 12 kills in the game. Six of those kills came in the opening game and helped spark a 13-1 MSU run midway in the period. Senior libero Ashley Sledge led the MSU defense with nine kills.
UAB will next take the court on Sept. 28 when it hosts cross-town rival Samford at 7 p.m. in Bartow Arena.
