EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Belmont University opened the 2004 University of Evansville Invitational with a 3-0 victory over UAB in volleyball action Friday evening at the Carson Center on the Evansville campus. The Bruins topped UAB 30-27, 30-20, 30-26 in the tournament's opening match. Belmont (2-0) used a blistering attack early to jump to a two-games-to-none lead, as Belmont hit .348 and .314 in games one and two respectively. Conversely, UAB hit .318 in a tight game one, but the Blazers hit .000 in game two. For the match, the Bruins hit .268 as a team, with four players hitting above .300 for the match. Freshman middle blocker Angie Ping led UAB (0-2) with eight kills, while hitting for .412, and sophomore libero Brianna Galvin posted a match-high 16 digs for the Blazers. "Some of the new, younger players are starting to come together for us," said UAB head coach Melinda Claiborne. "We need to gel a little better as a team. Hopefully, we will be able to get on track quickly." Junior outside hitter Lindsay Cleveland paced a balanced Belmont attack with 13 kills, while junior middle hitter Sara Jacobson added 11 kills while hitting .471. Freshman libero Brittney Card led the Belmont defense, recording 15 digs. Tournament action at the 2004 University of Invitational continues Saturday as UAB will meet Chicago State at 10 a.m. and close the tournament against Evansville at 5:30 p.m.
