JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - Freshman Christina Wentworth shot a three-over par 75 in Monday's first round of the 2005 Chris Banister Classic and stands tied for seventh place to lead UAB in the event hosted by Jacksonville State. The Blazers scored a first-round 326 and are in ninth place out of 12 teams with two rounds to go.
Junior Martha Hudson's first round 79 has her tied for 20th overall. Ashlee Claydon fired an 84 (T-43rd), Janey Deimling and 88 (T-55th) and freshman Krista Tressler carded an 89 (T-57th) in her first collegiate round for the Blazers.
"Christina finally shook off the early jitters," UAB head coach Kim Wilcox said. "She showed signs in our last tournament at Kentucky, dipping down to a 76 in one round. It's nice to see her come out and use that momentum and focus on improving."
Wentworth's UAB career low round is tied with a South Alabama trio of Darah Newell, Elin Andersson and Sara Marti at 75. That group is three shots behind individual leader Therese Nilsson of New Orleans who carded an even par 72 on the 6,012-yard Robert Trent Jones-Silver Lakes Course. Sarah Colbert of Western Kentucky and Mercedes Huarte of host JSU are tied for second at one-over 73.
The Blazers are just 10 strokes from the top five and stand a shot behind Samford, two behind Mercer and eight in back of Lamar. South Alabama leads the way after recording a team score of 301 in the first round. Jacksonville State (306), Western Kentucky (313) and New Orleans and Tennessee Tech, both of which shot 316 in round one, round out the top five.
"We've got some room for improvement, which means we've got the chance to make a move on this field. We're not too far from the leaders and can catch some folks. Hopefully, we'll play a little smarter on Tuesday and do just that."
The Chris Banister Classic breaks the mold of traditional 54-hole college tournaments with 27 holes played each day. Results from round two will not be finalized until the back nine are played Tuesday morning. The final 18-hole round will take place Tuesday afternoon.
