CHULA VISTA, Calif. - Freshman Christina Wentworth shot rounds of 75-74 in the first two rounds of the Taylor Made/Adidas Lady Aztec Invitational on Monday to lead UAB women's golf's contingent in the tournament hosted by San Diego State. Wentworth's second round, two-over par score established a new UAB career low round for the Macon, Ga., product. She is tied for sixth place on the individual leaderboard and is six strokes off the lead.
The Blazers fired team rounds of 316 and 312, the later of which trimmed three strokes off their season-low round for 18 holes. UAB stands in eighth place with a 36-hole total of 628. They are just eight strokes from the top five, however, with a round to play. Host San Diego State shot 300-305 and sits atop the leaderboard. Sacramento State (607), Northern Arizona (609), Montana (612) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (620) round out the top five. San Diego State's "B" team is in sixth while UC-Riverside is six shots ahead of UAB in seventh at 622.
"I'm pleased because we're getting better," UAB head coach Kim Wilcox said. "Christina (Wentworth) continues to gain confidence and experience, Krista Tressler shot a lot better in her second round today and our returning players are starting to find their grooves. Keep in mind Martha Hudson is still recuperating from shoulder surgery and today was her first 36-holes in one day since her operation, so we've had some factors working against us. Still, we're getting better and you can't be dissatisfied with that."
Wentworth's 149 is five-over par and tied with Sophia Choi of Northern Arizona and San Diego State's Anna Booth. That trio is six shots of the lead and Margaux Sheehand of Sacramento State, who blistered the par 72, 6,259-yard Auld Course for a four-under 68 in round one, but turned in a three-over 75 in the second round to stand at one-under 143 for the two rounds thus far.
UAB senior Janey Deimling shot 75-77 and is tied for 12th out of 71 golfers at eight-over par. Hudson's 79-82 has the Blazer junior in 40th place at 18-over. Tressler went from 87 in round one to 79 in the second round. The 79 is a new UAB career low for the Fayetteville, Pa., product. Sophomore Ashlee Claydon shot 88-89 for UAB as well.
"We know we're capable of shooting low," Wilcox said. "Knowing that, and that we are just a few strokes from the top five, we know we have a chance of ending our fall season on a very strong note. Hopefully, we'll come out firing tomorrow and do just that."
The Blazers end their fall season with the third and final round of the Aztec on Tuesday. Their first spring tournament will be at the University of Miami's Papa John's Collegiate in Coral Gables, Fla., in mid-February.
