LEXINGTON, Ky. - Senior Janey Deimling and freshman Christina Wentworth each fired four-over-par 76 in Sunday's third and final round of the 2005 Wildcat Fall Invitational to lead UAB to a 15th place finish. The Blazers made a 24-stroke recovery from Saturday's second round to shoot a 320 for the day.
"Normally, turning around 24 strokes is a great thing," UAB head coach Kim Wilcox said. "But 320 is where we probably should have been in the second round had the circumstances not affected us. It was a nice recovery and we learned from it."
The Blazers' carded a 344 in Saturday's second round after struggling a bit with the par-72, 6,003-yard Big Blue Course at the University of Kentucky's University Club. Junior Martha Hudson withdrew from round two to prevent additional stress on her recovering shoulder which prevented Wilcox the ability to drop the high round of the day.
Sunday's round saw Deimling and Wentworth both notch season low rounds. Junior Lois Jones went from a 98 in round two to an 89 Sunday. Ashlee Claydon shot an 86 while Hudson came in with an 82 Sunday.
"We saw some good signs today," Wilcox said. "Janey (Deimling) improved and Christina (Wentworth) put together a solid round. Lois (Jones) improved a great deal and Ashlee was consistent, which is what I expect from a player with her experience. Martha was great from tee to green but didn't get the breaks putting. Still, we made a nice effort after a second round that we were all disappointed in."
Deimling finished the 54-hole event at 16-over par, 232 which was good enough for a 35th place tie. Wentworth's 85-80-76=241 put her tied for 61st with a 25-over score. Claydon (86-88-86=260) and Jones (82-98-89=269) placed 78th and 80th, respectively, in the 81-person field. Hudson's second round withdrawal left her out of the individual standings. She shot rounds of 85 and 82 in her two rounds of play.
The Florida Gators shot a 297 team score on Sunday to cruise to a 10-shot win over North Carolina in the team standings. Miami (Fla.) was third while host Kentucky and Mississippi State rounded out the top five. Conference USA squads East Carolina (301-302-298/6th place), Memphis (311-298-308/7th) and Southern Miss (324-309-314/12th) also competed in the event.
Florida's Mallory Blackwelder held on to her early lead for the individual medalist honors with a four-under par, 212 for the tournament. Her rounds of 68-71-73 gave her a six stroke win over Amanda Mathis of Mississippi State and Katie Miller of North Carolina.
Wilcox and the Blazers return to the links a week from Monday in the Chris Banister Memorial Classic hosted by Jacksonville State. The 54-hole event will play 36 holes Monday, Oct. 10 with the final 18 on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at the Robert Trent Jones Silver Lakes course in Jacksonville, Ala.
