BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB volleyball team snapped its three-match losing streak with a 3-0 victory over Southern Miss Sunday afternoon at Bartow Arena. With the win, the Blazers improve to 14-7 and 5-6 in Conference USA while the Golden Eagles drop to 7-13 overall and are still in search of their first league win at 0-11.
Freshman Ivana Bozic led all players with 18 kills and added 11 digs for UAB while sophomore Angie Ping had a career-match, getting her first start of the year and hitting .462 with a career-best 13 kills. Sophomore Shaniquwa Cooper led all players with five blocks and the Blazers racked up 13 service aces, compared to just three for the Golden Eagles. Ashley Petrinec led Southern Miss with nine kills.
"I thought we played much better today," said UAB co-interim head coach Nikola Petrovic. "We really played as a team and Angie [Ping] stepped in today and gave us a big lift."
After holding on for a 30-27 win in the opening game, the Blazers had an easier time with a 30-22 victory in game two, led by Bozic's nine kills. The third and final game was a closer contest, but Southern Miss had more attack errors than kills for a negative hitting percentage, allowing UAB to finish off the match with a 30-26 win. Overall in the contest, the Blazers hit .216 as a team compared to the Golden Eagles' .088.
UAB returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Georgia State in the final non-conference matchup of the season. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Bartow Arena.
