BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- After dropping out of the rankings for one week, the UAB cross country team has been ranked seventh in the South region by the Women's Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches Association, announced UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. This marks the highest ranking for the Blazers this season.
"This is a good step for us," said Stanfield. "We were disappointed when we dropped out of the rankings last week, but we are glad to be back in. Now we can focus on improving our ranking and our performance each week."
Tennessee is ranked No. 1 in the region, with Georgia and Vanderbilt rounding out the top three. UAB is ranked ahead of Alabama (eighth), Mississippi State (ninth) and 10th-ranked Florida. The rankings include all schools in Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida.
The Blazers are coming off a 20th-place finish in the women's Blue Division of the prestigious Notre Dame Cross Country Invitational last weekend. The Blazers were led by junior Elizabeth Ambrus, who placed 60th out of 200 competitors in the 5K race with a time of 17:58. UAB competed against several nationally-ranked teams in the contest, including top-25 programs Michigan, Illinois and Notre Dame.
UAB will take a week off from competition before heading to Evansville, Ind., for the Evansville Invitational on Oct. 15.
