Blazers Drop Regular Season Finale At East Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C.-- The UAB volleyball team fell by a score of 3-1 in its final regular season match at East Carolina on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Blazers are now 14-12 overall and 5-10, and will be the tenth-seed at the 2005 Conference USA Tournament hosted by Rice next week in Houston. East Carolina improves to 18-10 and 9-6 in league play, good for fifth-place.
Four different UAB players recorded double-digit kills on Sunday, including three freshmen who notched 14 apiece. Ivana Bozic and Aleksandra Vujovic each posted 14 kills and 10 digs while Casey Dent had 14 kills to go along with a match-best four service aces. The Pirates were led by Kelley Wernert's match-high 16 putaways.
After dropping the first game, UAB came back to dominate game two by a score of 30-20, outhitting the Pirates by a mark of .327 to -.097.
But East Carolina responded for a 30-19 win in the third game to swing momentum its way and take a two games to one lead. The Pirates then finished off the Blazers with a hard-fought, 30-26 win in the fourth and deciding game.
UAB has lost five in a row, and eight of its last nine matches heading into the C-USA Tournament. The tenth-seeded Blazers will face No. 7 SMU on Thursday evening at 8 p.m. CT in the fourth and final match of the first day of competition at Rice's Autry Court. The Mustangs held on for a 3-2 win over the Blazers on Oct. 21 in Dallas.
