BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB concluded its regular season with a 10-6-1 overall and 5-3-1 Conference USA record with the Oct. 30, 3-0 victory over Florida International. The Blazers now await final seeding for the 2005 C-USA Championships, which will be decided by a makeup weekend featuring four matches cancelled by Hurricane Wilma two weeks ago.
South Carolina and East Carolina each play at FIU and UCF in matches on Friday and Sunday, Feb. 4 and 6 in the final regular season bouts in league play.
SMU finished the 2005 regular season as Conference USA champions with an 8-1 run through the league. UAB and South Carolina are currently tied for second place with 16 points. Marshall is in fourth while FIU, Kentucky and Memphis are all knotted in fifth with 11 points. The top eight seeds make the tournament.
UAB has been energized by the return of two-time All-American Leandro de Oliveira, who missed seven matches with a knee injury. He returned in the Oct. 28 win over UCF, then scored the game-winning goal in the victory over FIU.
The Blazers have won four of their last five and five of seven heading into the postseason. Dejan Jakovic, the reigning C-USA Defensive Player of the Week, goalkeeper A.J. Robles and the Blazer defenders have helped UAB register three shutouts in four contests to end the year.
The C-USA Tournament will be played Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, Nov. 9, 11 and 13, at Westcott Field in Dallas, Texas. SMU will host.
