BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB volleyball team was swept 3-0 by Tulane on Friday evening at Bartow Arena. The Blazers fall to 14-9 overall and 5-7 in Conference USA while the Green Wave improves to 3-12, 2-10 in league play. Six players recorded double-digit dig performances in the contest.
The Blazers got ten kills each from Isabel Oquendo, Casey Dent and Aleksandra Vujovic. Dent's .474 hitting percentage led all players and Vujovic added 12 digs for a double-double in her first match back after missing the previous two with an injury. Ivana Bozic led UAB with 14 kills and added 12 digs while Nevena Stefanov had 43 assists and 11 digs. Tulane sensation Sara Radosevic led all players with 19 kills while Kelli Dickson racked up a match-high 24 digs for the Green Wave in the victory.
"Give credit to Tulane," said UAB co-interim head coach Nikola Petrovic. "They have some very impressive players who came in here ready to play tonight. We have one more home match on Sunday where we hope to bounce back with a victory."
Despite trailing by four in the early parts of game one, the Blazers pulled back even at 11-11. But Tulane fought back and two Radosevic kills gave the Green Wave its biggest lead at 22-16. But UAB pulled together, scoring seven of the next 11 points, capped off by a Bozic service ace and causing a Tulane timeout. Trailing by four points at 28-24, UAB put together a game-tying rally, but the Green Wave finished things off on the next two points, including a duo block by Radosevic and Jen Linder on game point.
UAB's first lead of the second game came after a Dent kill which made the score 15-14. But the Green Wave came crashing back to capture a 30-27 win and take a commanding two games to none lead.
The Blazers came out of the gate firing on all cylinders in game three, jumping out to an 11-5 lead at the first timeout. UAB maintained a five-point lead throughout the majority of the game, before Tulane pulled within two points at 22-20 after a duo block. After the Green Wave pulled even at 24-24, the teams traded points back-and-forth. Two-consecutive Tulane kills gave the Green Wave a 28-26 advantage. After a UAB attack error, Tulane finished off the game and the match, winning by a score of 30-27 again.
The Blazers return to action Sunday when they host UTEP at 1 p.m. in the final home match of the season at Bartow Arena.
