IRVING, Texas -
Seven UAB men's soccer players were named All-Conference USA on Tuesday as the league announced its 2005 all-conference first, second and third teams and postseason award winners as selected by the conference's head coaches. The awards are announced one day before the start of the 11th Annual C-USA Tournament, which is scheduled for Wednesday through Sunday, Nov. 9-13, at Westcott Field on the campus of SMU in Dallas, Texas.
UAB midfielders Jason McLaughlin and Sandy Gbandi and defender Dejan Jakovic were each named to the league's second team all-conference squad. Forwards Maurice Hughes and Jerson Monteiro and goalkeeper A.J. Robles were tabbed third team all-conference members. Freshman midfielder Two-Boys Gumede was named to the league's all-freshman team.
"We are certainly pleased that the coaches have chosen to honor these individuals for their performances this year," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "Each are deserving of their respective awards and have played instrumental roles in our success this season."
UAB earned the third seed in this week's Conference USA Tournament after finishing 10-6-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the league through the regular season. The Blazers face rival Memphis at noon CT Wednesday in the first of four quarterfinal match ups.
The selections were repeat performances for Gbandi and Monteiro. Gbandi was named first team All-C-USA in 2004. Monteiro earned third team and all-freshman honors in 2003. The seven selections is the highest number of all-conference picks for the Blazers since seven were also so honored after the 2001 season.
SMU's senior forward Duke Hashimoto was named the league's 2005 Player of the Year. South Carolina senior defender Greg Reece earned Defensive Player of the Year honors. The Gamecock's freshman goalkeeper, Mike Gustavson, was named the league's freshman of the year. Marshall coach Bob Gray was dubbed the league's Coach of the Year in the Thundering Herd's first season in Conference USA.
