LAKELAND, Fla. - Two former UAB women's golf standouts hit the course Nov. 8-10 in Lakeland, Fla., in an attempt to qualify for a playing spot on the 2006 Futures Tour, the official developmental tour of the LPGA. Brooke Mangan and the former Liz Schweihs, now Liz Vander Biezen, will both compete in the 72-hole stroke play qualifier.
The qualifier consists of 18 holes each on three different courses in the Lakeland, Fla., area, then a final round on one of the three. There will be a player cut after 54 holes, but any golfer who completes a 54-hole minimum without shooting 89 or above on any given round will qualify to play on the 2006 Futures Tour. The three courses are the Cleveland Heights Golf Course, Huntington Hills Golf and Country Club and Schalamar Creek Golf Club. The final 18 holes will be played at Cleveland Heights.
Mangan was a four-time All-Conference USA selection for UAB from 2001-05. She became the first Blazer to ever appear in an NCAA women's golf postseason event when she earned an at-large invitation to the 2005 NCAA East Regional. Mangan, a native of Mornington, Australia, holds UAB's records for 18- (68) and 54-hole (214) scores.
Vander Biezen, a native of Lockport, Ill., who married in October of this year, was a three-year letterwinner for UAB from 2002-05 after transferring from Lewis University in Joliet, Ill. She recorded eight top-10 finishes in her three-year career and was a two-time Confernece USA Honor Roll member.
The top money winners on the Futures Tour qualify for an LPGA card at the end of the season.
