UAB Battles Memphis In C-USA Men's Soccer Tournament

DALLAS, Texas - The UAB men's soccer team faces old nemesis Memphis Wednesday in a high-noon showdown in the 2005 Conference USA Men's Soccer Championships. The third seeded Blazers and sixth-seeded Tigers hope to move on to Friday evening's semifinals against the winner of the Kentucky-South Carolina quarterfinal match. While the Blazers beat Memphis, 2-1, in the regular season match up between the two, the last time they met in the postseason was in last year's C-USA Tournament title game won by the Tigers, 3-2.
"UAB and Memphis always play tough, exciting matches against each other," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "This one won't be any different. This is going to be a heck of a game. We know that it's hard to beat the same team twice in one year, so we're going to have to be at our best."
The Blazers beat Memphis, 2-1, on Oct. 15 at UAB's West Campus Field. Jason McLaughlin's strike with :51 remaining gave the Blazers the win, but UAB had several chances in the final five minutes before finally converting. Prior to that win, however, Memphis owned a three-match win streak against UAB.
The winner of the match plays the South Carolina-Kentucky winner in a 5 p.m. CT semifinal on Friday, Nov. 11. The championship contest will kickoff a 1 p.m. CT Sunday, Nov. 13 and will air live nationally on College Sports Television (CSTV).
The bottom half of the league tournament bracket features No. 4 Florida International against No. 5 Marshall and top-seed and host SMU against No. 8 seed Tulsa. Those matches will be played Wednesday evening. The winner of the tournament receives the league's automatic bid to the 2005 NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament. The remainder of the teams will hope for an at-large bid to the postseason.
