BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Carolyn Cochran, a standout women's golfer for Daphne High School, and Jennifer Head, a transfer from Auburn University, have signed to play women's college golf for UAB, head women's golf coach Kim Wilcox announced Thursday. The pair are the first signees for UAB women's golf for the 2005-06 recruiting year.
"We are excited about Carolyn and Jennifer joining the UAB women's golf program," Wilcox said. "Both young women bring experience and talent to our program and will have an immediate impact on our team."
Cochran posted win at Callaway Gardens and Cypress Bend on the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour last year. She will play in the SJGT Tournament of Champions later this month as well. She has won the past four Baldwin County girls golf titles and is a three-time member of the Alabama High School Athletic Association's all-state team, finishing in the top 10 in the state tournament each of the last three years. Cochran finished 10th in the state in her freshman season, seventh as a sophomore and fourth in her junior campaign.
"Carolyn has a good deal of junior and high school golf experience," Wilcox said. "She is a very mature player for her age and has the mental toughness to succeed under pressure. That will serve her well in college golf."
Head, a native of Midland, Ga., and graduate of Columbus High School, turned in a 77.53 stroke average playing in 16 tournaments for Auburn from 2002-2004. She played five semesters for the Tigers and will have a year of eligibility remaining for UAB. She shot 70-71 and finished tied for third in the 2003-04 SEC-ACC Challenge and trimmed nearly two strokes off her scoring average from her freshman to sophomore seasons.
"Experienced college golfers are always an asset," Wilcox said. "To have someone who has been battle-tested, if you will, helps your team in terms of consistency and leadership. Jennifer will bring some qualities to our team that we will need next year with a roster that will only have two other upperclassmen."
Wilcox hopes to sign one more for the 2005-06 recruiting year.
