HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Junior Janey Deimling shot rounds of 78 and 75 Friday to capture individual medalist honors and lead UAB's women's golf team to a team victory in the Miss Louis Season Opener hosted by Southern miss. The win was Deimling's first career tournament victory and the first team win of the year for UAB.
"It was a good day," UAB head coach Kim Wilcox said. "The greens were hard to read and no one really putted well. We had a morning delay for frost and had to play through some wet conditions, so everyone had a challenging day on the course. Still, we came out with a win and Janey and Martha played exceptionally well for us."
The Blazers shot team scores of 313 and 318 in the one day, 36-hole tournament on the par-72, 5,891-yard Shadow Ridge Golf Course. UAB was 10-strokes ahead of Southern Miss. Jackson State and the University of Mobile rounded out the team field.
UAB sophomore Martha Hudson finished second in the individual standings with back-to-back rounds of 77 to record her highest career finish. Senior Brooke Mangan's 73-83 was good enough for seventh place while Liz Schweihs fired rounds of 80-83 to finish in ninth. Sophomore Lois Jones made her UAB debut with rounds of 99-94 in her first collegiate tournament.
"It's a good starting point," Wilcox said. "We finished the fall season very strong and needed an event like this to get us back in playing shape for the spring. We need to get in a few more practice rounds to get ready for our first full tournament in two weeks, but that's what playing golf in February is like."
Wilcox's club returns to action Feb. 28 and March 1 at Bent Brook Golf Course in McCalla, Ala., when the Blazers take on the field at Birmingham-Southern's Buffalo Rock Southern Shootout.
