McCALLA, Ala. - UAB senior Brooke Mangan shot a two-under-par 70 Tuesday and came back from eighth place after round one to win the 2005 Buffalo Rock Southern Shootout by a single stroke. Mangan's 76-70 beat out Jacksonville State's Shanelle Howard, who fired rounds of 70-77 and finished second. UAB placed third in the team standings behind team champion JSU and host and runner-up Birmingham-Southern.
"The seniors came back and did well today," UAB head coach Kim Wilcox said. "Brooke (Mangan) and Liz (Schweihs) responded to the challenge and were leaders on the course for us after first round scores that could have been better. The conditions were awful with the cold temperatures and the wind and the course was still wet from the rains Sunday and Monday. All that considered, our team score of 310 was pretty strong."
The Blazers' rounds of 307 and 310 put them four strokes out of second and just five shots off the lead. Jacksonville State's 612 nipped BSC by a single stroke. The Gamecocks won the tournament for the second straight year. UAB won the first Southern Shootout in 2002. The Blazers finished ahead of Troy and Gardner-Webb, which rounded out the top five in the 14-team field.
Senior Liz Schweihs responded to her first round 81 with a two-over-par 74 in the second round to finish tied for 14th overall. Janey Deimling, who was tied for third after a 74 in the first round, shot 78 in round two and wound up tied for ninth on the leaderboard. Sophomore Martha Hudson, who was battling a sore shoulder in addition to the cold temperatures, shot 88 on Tuesday. Lois Jones carded a 90 for the Blazers as well.
Mangan captured her third career individual medalist honor and the second of the year. She won the John Kirk/Lady Panther Invitational hosted by Georgia State in October.
"Brooke played extremely well today," Wilcox said. "Anytime you can fight adverse weather conditions and improve your score from one round to the next, plus put yourself in position to win a tournament, you've played strong golf. Brooke is one of our leaders and she showed why today."
The victory for Mangan gives UAB its first back-to-back individual medalists in school history. Deimling won the Miss Louis Season Opener hosted by Southern Miss on Feb. 11 in the Blazers' last outing.
UAB will travel to Tampa, Fla., to compete in USF's Waterfele Invitational March 14-15.
