BRADENTON, Fla. - Junior Janey Deimling shot a third round 75 to finish in ninth place to highlight UAB women's golf's seventh place team finish at the Waterlefe Invitational hosted by USF on Tuesday. Deimling's three-round total of 224 was eight-over-par for the tournament and just two strokes from a top-five finish.
The Blazers held on to seventh place and finished just three strokes behind Florida International. Miami (Fla.) took the team title with an impressive 888 team score. Host USF was second while Coastal Carolina, Campbell and Georgia State rounded out the top five. UAB finished ahead of UCF, Georgetown, Southern Miss, Mercer and Ball State in the 12-team field.
"All things considered, we had a good tournament," UAB head coach Kim Wilcox said. "For us to hold on to seventh place with Martha's (Hudson) shoulder problems showed that we had some toughness. We competed well against a very good field and came out alright. I'm particularly pleased with the level of play and consistency we're seeing from Janey (Deimling). With one or two others stepping their games up a bit, we move from seventh place to at or near the top of the standings."
Deimling recorded her sixth career top-20 finish in the event after a personal-best, even-par 72 in Monday's second round. Senior Brooke Mangan shot a third-round 79 to finish tied for 19th overall. Liz Schweihs notched a 76 on Tuesday and finished at 234 and tied for 24th for the tournament. Sophomore Lois Jones, competing in just her third collegiate event, shot a third-round 99. Hudson, who missed Monday's second round with shoulder discomfort, bounced back to shoot 85 Tuesday to round out UAB's finishers.
Miami's Tina Miller blistered the Waterlefe Golf Club course for a four-under 68 on Tuesday to finish at 212 and four-under-par for the tournament and capture the individual medalist honors. Georgia State's Lisbeth Meincke finished second at two-under, 214. USF's Daniella Ronderos had Tuesday's low round at five-under 67 to finish third.
The Blazers next return to Birmingham for the Samford Intercollegiate March 21-22 at Timberline Golf Course in Calera, Ala.
