LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The UAB softball team fell to the Louisville Cardinals by a score of 6-1 on Wednesday at Ulmer Stadium as the Blazers completed their first Conference USA road series of the season.
The Blazers (15-24, 2-7 C-USA) were swept by the Cardinals in the three-game set and will now face the Saint Louis Billikens this weekend in St. Louis, Mo. Louisville (19-12, 5-1 C-USA) meanwhile won for the fifth time in its last seven games.
UAB freshman left-hander Jennifer Nelson (6-6) took the loss as she allowed six runs on 11 hits in six innings of work. She struck out four and did not walk a batter. Louisville starter Aja Sherman (8-7) was tough on the Blazer lineup for the second-straight day as she tossed a complete game, allowing only one run on four hits. Sherman walked one and struck out 10.
The Cardinals took advantage of several Blazer miscues in the bottom of the third to take the lead. Leslie Garland began the inning with a single to right and then Audrey Rendon popped a ball toward Nelson in the circle, but she appeared to lose the ball in the sun as it glanced off of her glove and fell to the ground, allowing Rendon to reach base safely.
Candi Hicks then struck out, but second baseman Leigh Walker dropped a fly ball off the bat of Courtney Moore to load the bases. Lacy Wood promptly delivered a single up the middle to score a pair and then Lisa Estes had an RBI groundout to make it 3-0. Michelle Vasquez dumped a single into shallow left-center field to extend Louisville's lead to 4-0. Nelson induced Sarah Totten to ground to shortstop to end the inning. The Cardinals scored two more in the fourth to make it 6-0.
The Blazers finally scored in the fifth as Leigh Walker reached on an infield single with two outs, allowing Dusti Roberts to score. Roberts ripped a double to right center to lead off the inning, the Blazers' first extra-base hit of the series.
UAB will continue its roadtrip as the Blazers face Saint Louis this weekend in St. Louis, Mo., beginning with a doubleheader on Friday set for 4 p.m. at the Billiken Sports Center.
