GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Brooke Mangan shot a nine-over-par 79 in Saturday's third and final round of the 2005 NCAA Women's Golf East Regional at the University of Florida's University Golf Course. The UAB senior's 21-over 231 put her in a seven-way tie for 60th place on the individual leaderboard in the first postseason appearance for any Blazer women's golfer.
Mangan carded seven bogeys and one double bogey with no birdies in her third round effort. Her three round scores were 77-75-79.
No. 1 Duke was upset by Ohio State in the team standings. The Buckeyes pulled off a six-stroke team win despite an 11-over-par team total on Saturday. Furman finished third while Conference USA champ Tulane wound up sixth. The top eight teams (OSU, Duke, Furman, Pepperdine, Virginia, Tulane, Florida and Washington) advance to the NCAA National Tournament May 17-20 in Corvallis, Ore.
Duke's Anna Grzebein finished with a three-under par 67 in the third round and took individual medalist honors with a one-under 209 for the tournament. Jenny Suh of Furman and Leah Wigger of Virginia tied for second. Kristen Svicarovich of Vanderbilt and Jenna Pearson of South Carolina were the top individuals not on the eight national qualifying teams who also advance to the national tournament later this month.
The appearance for Mangan finished off an historic season in UAB women's golf. Five school records were broken or tied this season, including all three team scoring records. Kim Wilcox's club notched a school-record-tying 299 team score for a round at the Taco Bell Intercollegiate in Greenville, N.C., in October. UAB's 912 score for the 54-hole event trimmed a stroke off the previous school record for three rounds. The team's 607 score for 36-holes at the Lady Aztec Fall Individual in October trimmed a shot off the previous school record for two rounds. The Blazers then chopped another from that record by firing a 606 at the John Kirk/Lady Panther Invitational one week later.
UAB also saw personal records fall. Mangan established a new school record with a round of 68 at the Taco Bell Intercollegiate. Her 54-hole score of 214 shattered the old mark of 221 held by Marika Pluta and Heather Lourie. Each of UAB's individuals has also either broken or tied a personal record for 18- or 54-hole scores this season.
