TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The UAB women's golf team trimmed 16 strokes off its first round score in Monday's second of three rounds at the University of Alabama's Ann Rhoads Invitational. The Blazers' 316 team score helped them climb from 14th place of 16 teams after round one to 12th after round two.
Martha Hudson again led the way for UAB, improving two strokes from 78 to 76 in Monday's round. The Black Mountain, N.C., native is tied for 22nd place overall at 10-over par on the individual leaderboard. Senior Janey Deimling shot a second round 77 (+14, T-44th) while sophomore Ashley Claydon carded a 79 on Monday to stand at 21-over par and tied for 65th overall. Freshman Christina Wentworth notched an 84 in just her second round as a collegian. Her two-round 167 is tied for 67th overall. Junior Lois Jones shot a 93 in the second round.
"We certainly played better than we did the first round," UAB head coach Kim Wilcox said. "We're not yet where I thought we would be, but we took some strides toward improvement today and that is a good sign. For Martha to be playing as well as she is after just being cleared to play this week is outstanding. Now we just need the rest of the team to play at the level of which they are capable and our standing will improve."
Hudson had off-season shoulder surgery to repair loose cartilage in her lead shoulder. She was cleared to compete in a full 18-hole round last Wednesday.
UAB is 14 team strokes behind Conference USA rival Memphis and 18 shots from the top-10. Augusta State leads host Alabama by 12 strokes for first place. Augusta State's Garrett Phillips is five-under par for the tournament after rounds of 71 and 68. She has a five-shot lead on Michelle Jarman of UNC Wilmington for first place.
The tournament's third and final round will play Tuesday at the par-72, 6,033-yard Ol' Colony Course.
