BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Coming off a pair of outstanding offensive performances this past week, senior forward Jerson Monteiro was tabbed the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week, league officials announced on Monday. Furthermore, the Houston, Texas native was also selected to the College Soccer News' National Team of the Week, following his performance against Memphis and then-No. 18 Kentucky.
It marks the first time Monteiro has earned the National Team of the Week accolade, and the second time he has been tabbed a C-USA Player of the week (Sept. 8, 2003) in his career.
"This is a very deserving award for Jerson," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "To be able to score the kind of goals he has scored for us against quality competition is terrific, and I am glad that the league took notice. Jerson is certainly proving he is one of the elite players in not only Conference USA, but in the nation as well."
Monteiro has been red hot as of late, scoring in four consecutive games, including three goals during this past week. Last Saturday against UK, Monteiro scored the game winner just 1:27 into the first overtime to lead the Blazers to a 1-0 victory over the nationally-ranked Wildcats. He also scored two goals in a span of 19 minutes to knot-up Wednesday's match against C-USA foe Memphis at 2-2, before the Tigers picked up a late game-winner in the 3-2 Blazer defeat.
Thanks in large part to his five goals over UAB's last four matches, Monteiro is now tied with his brother, former UAB great Flavio Monteiro, in second place on the school's career scoring list with 30 goals. Furthermore, he ranks second in Conference USA in goals (10) and points (24) on the campaign.
"To move into second place all time and tie his brother Flavio is quite an accomplishment," Getman said. "Flavio was a great player, so I am sure he will enjoy being able to brag a little to his brother. Jerson has had a terrific season and scored a great goal for us Saturday night and he is certainly the man getting it done for us right now."
Monteiro and the Blazers will next be in action on Saturday, Oct. 21, when they do battle against C-USA rival Tulsa at 2 p.m. on West Campus Field. Any student wishing to support the UAB men's soccer team by coming to Saturday's game will receive a free UAB Soccer backpack, as well as a free dinner, when presenting a valid student ID at the gate.
