BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- Stephanie Gammon, who has made a name for herself as one of the top prep distance runners in South Carolina the past four years, has signed a national letter-of-intent with UAB, according to an announcement by head coach Ray Stanfield.
Gammon, who attends Daniel High School in Clemson, finished second at the South Carolina Class AAA state cross country championship last Saturday. Gammon has been among the top three individual finishers each of the past four years, winning the state title as a sophomore in 2004. She placed third as a freshman in 2003 and was third again last year during her junior season.
Gammon has also had plenty of success during the spring season as a member of the Daniel track and field team. Last spring, she helped lead Daniel to a state championship as she won the 3,200-meter run, was second in the 1,600 and was a member of the school's winning 4x800-meter relay team.
As a sophomore in 2004, Gammon placed third in the 1,600-meter run and fourth in the 3,200. Daniel was the state runner-up as a team in '04. Gammon placed fourth in both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs as freshman in 2003 as she helped her team to a third place state finish.
"We are extremely excited to have Stephanie coming to UAB," said Blazers' head coach Ray Stanfield, the 2006 Conference USA Coach-of-the-Year. "She will bring an attitude of winning and that is something we look for in our student-athletes. We want girls who know how to compete for conference and regional championships."
Gammon joins Lacey Wright, an all-state distance runner from Scottsboro (Ala.) High School as a fall signee for UAB.
