CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Junior Martha Hudson shot a second-round 76 to lead the UAB women's golf contingent at the Papa Johns Collegiate tournament hosted by the University of Miami Monday. Her two-round score fo 157 is 13-over par and tied for 39th on the individual leaderboard.
UAB's team total of 317 on Monday was five shots better than its first-round total Sunday. The Blazers are still 12th out of 12 teams, however, against a field featuring 11 top-100 squads.
"We were better, but we still have a ways to go," UAB head coach Kim Wilcox said. "We've got a couple golfers who didn't finish their rounds the way they needed to, so we'll focus on that for Tuesday. Our players are starting to see where they need to pick up their games to compete with the level of competition we're playing here, so this is going to turn out to be a great learning experience for us."
UAB's first-round leader, freshman Christina Wentworth, shot an 82 on Monday after a 78 Sunday. She is tied for 50th overall with a 160 after 36-holes. Janey Deimling (83-79=162), Ashlee Claydon (83-80=163) and Krista Tressler (80-86=166) also competed for the Blazers.
N.C. State knocked 23 strokes off its first-round team total to move into a two-shot lead over East Carolina after two rounds with a 310-287=597. Host Miami, 13th-ranked Virginia and USF round out the top five. UAB is 22 strokes behind Kentucky for 11th place.
USF's Christina Jones is one-under par and has a three shot lead on a trio of players for the individual title. The 54-hole tournament concludes with 18 holes Tuesday on the par-72, 6,317-yard Don Shula's Golf Course near Miami.
