CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Senior Janey Deimling shot a three-over 75 to notch UAB's lowest round of the tournament and the Blazers wrapped up a 12th place finish against a tough field at the Papa Johns Collegiate Tuesday. Martha Hudson shot 79 for UAB in the final round on the par-72, 6,317-yard Don Shula's Golf Course near Miami.
"We duplicated our team score from yesterday," UAB head coach Kim Wilcox said. "Normally, I wouldn't be satisfied with that because it indicates we didn't get better. But, we showed improvements in some areas and we didn't get intimidated by our competition, which we could have. Overall, we can take a lot from this weekend to help us improve."
Deimling roared back from an opening round 83 Sunday to finish 83-79-75=237 and tied for 48th overall. Hudson's 81-76-79=236 was a stroke better at 20-over par and tied for 43rd. Christina Wentworth (78-82-80=240, T-54th), Ashlee Claydon (83-80-83=246, 61st) and Krista Tressler (80-86-85=251, T-62nd) also competed for UAB.
The Blazers were facing an 11-team field in which each team was ranked in the top-100 according to the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. No. 49 N.C. State took the team title with a 28-over par 892 for the 54-holes. East Carolina finished second, No. 13 Virginia third, host Miami (Fla.) was fourth and USF rounded out the top five.
USF's Christina Jones was the wire-to-wire individual leader, shooting rounds of 72-71-71 to win by seven strokes over Virginia's Leah Wigger.
Wilcox's club next plays in USF's Waterlefe Invitational March 20-21 in Bradenton, Fla.
