CRYSTAL LAKE, Fla. -- Christina Wentworth's five-over 77 put the UAB freshman in third place and anchored UAB's Friday performance that has the Blazers tied for second in the 2006 Cincinnati Spring Invitational. The two-day, 36-hole tournament is being played at the Plantation Inn Golf Club which plays par 72 and 6,161 yards.
Illinois has the team lead after shooting a 313 team total in Friday's opening round. UAB and Wichita State are tied for second at 327. Host Cincinnati is two strokes back in fourth. Marshall is in fifth place with a 339 and the Illinois "B" team shot a 344.
"The conditions were not ideal," UAB head coach Kim Wilcox said. "The wind was gusting all day and then it got really cool toward the end of the round. So, we were battling more than the course and the competition, but we held our own. I think we'll shoot better tomorrow, particularly if the winds hold off. If they do, we should be able to put together a run at the lead."
Wentworth was followed on UAB's roster by sophomore Ashlee Claydon, who carded an 82 Friday. Martha Hudson is a shot behind Claydon with an 83, Janey Deimling fired an opening-round 85 and freshman Krista Tressler shot an 89 on Friday.
The tournament concludes with an 18-hole round on Saturday.
