CRYSTAL LAKE, Fla. -- UAB freshman Christina Wentworth shot a seven-over 79 in cool and windy conditions Saturday to edge a pack of four women's golfers and capture the individual medalist honors at the 2006 Cincinnatio Spring Invitational. The victory was the first in Wentworth's career and the first title for a UAB women's golf since Brooke Mangan's title at the 2005 Birmingham-Southern Shootout.
"It was a fantastic victory for Christina and a good day for our program," UAB head coach Kim Wilcox said. "Christina had a couple of holes she wasn't very happy with, but she held on and finished and won. We're thrilled for her and hopeful this can give her, and our team performance can give us, some momentum heading through the rest of the spring."
UAB finished third after being tied for second after one round in the two-day, 36-hole tournament played on the par-72, 6,161-yard Plantation Inn Golf Club course. The Blazers shot team scores of 327-324 for a 651 total for the two rounds. They were 11 shots behind host Cincinnati, which vaulted into second place after a fourth place standing in the first round. UAB was 40 shots behind title-winner Illinios, which shot 313-311 for a 624.
Wentworth's 156 total edged Illinois' trio of Casey Burden, Seu Ki Park and Megan Naik, and Cincinnati's Hillery Wilson who all shot 157. UAB's Martha Hudson finished tied for ninth with rounds of 83-77-160. Janey Deimling (85-83=168, T-17th), Ashlee Claydon (82-90=172, 24th) and Krista Tressler (89-85=174, T-26th) helped UAB's cause.
UAB next faces the field at the Southern Miss Lady Eagle Classic April 10-11 in Hattiesburg, Miss. That tournament will be the final outing for the Blazers in preparation for the mid-April Conference USA Championships.
