HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Freshman Christina Wentworth continued her hot play, fighting through wind gusts and difficult hole placements Tuesday to card a 79 and finish tied for fourth at the 2006 Southern Miss Lady Eagle Invitational. Wentworth's rounds of 72-73-79 put the reigning C-USA Player of the Week just four shots out of second and 13 from the lead. UAB finished 8th out of 11 teams in the event.
The Blazers recorded rounds of 317-310-331 for a 958 total for the two-day, three-round event on the par-71, 6,109-yard Canebrake Golf Course. UAB was 12 shots behind a team of Scandinavian Amateurs and 22 strokes in back of New Orleans. Memphis took the team title with rounds of 292-296-305 for an 893 total score. South Alabama was second while Middle Tennessee, Southern Miss and West Florida rounded out the top five.
"We had a tough day with the wind and the hole placements were decidedly more difficult," UAB head coach Kim Wilcox said. "Only one team shot better in round three than they did in round two, so everyone was fighting the same problems. We didn't lose ground from our standing, though, and that's a positive. We could have moved up a spot or two, but playing with four golfers makes it tough to do that. We're still in good shape for the league tournament next week and should make a good run at it."
Stacey Tate of Memphis took individual medalist honors with a two-under 211 for the 54-holes. Elin Andersson of South Alabama shot a seven-over 220 for second place and Taryn Durham of Middle Tennessee was third with a nine-over 222. Dawn Marie Conaty of Memphis tied with Wentworth at 11-over par for the tournament.
Janey Deimling, who was tied for ninth after two rounds, finished tied for 13th overall with rounds of 78-72-81 for a 231 total score. Ashlee Claydon (81-81-84=246) and Krista Tressler (86-84-87=257) also turned in performances for the Blazers. UAB was playing without Martha Hudson who rested her sore left shoulder for the week in preparation for the league championships next weekend.
The Conference USA Tournament runs Monday, April 17 through Wednesday, April 19 in Greenville, N.C.
