UAB Women's Tennis Beats Southern Miss, 5-2

HATTIESBURG, Miss. --- The UAB women's tennis team continued its hot play by extending its winning streak to four matches with a 5-2 victory over Southern Miss Thursday afternoon. The Blazers (11-5, 2-1) won the doubles point and four of six singles matches in the match.
"I'm very glad to have gotten this win," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "This is a good for us because it helps with seeding at the upcoming Conference USA Championships. I'm also glad that the hard work that Antonia (Nugent) and Ornischa (Maier-Knapp) have been putting in is paying off."
UAB took the doubles point, winning the top two spots. In the No. 1 tilt, Blazers Annemieke Elsholz and Julia von Samson were 8-4 winners over Sherry Price and Courtney Ulrich. At the No. 2 position, UAB's Gulsah Esen and Ornischa Maier-Knapp beat Nikhila Narra and Ali Blackett, 8-5. Blazers Antonia Nugent and Seden Soyalp fell to Grace Kammerer and Chelsea Bond, 8-3, in the No. 3 slot.
The Blazers won the top and bottom two singles spots to seal the victory. In the No. 1 match, UAB's Maier-Knapp tallied a 6-4, 6-1 win over Price. It was Maier-Knapp's seventh-consecutive victory. In No. 2 singles, Blazer von Samson was a 2-6, 6-3, 10-6 winner over Kammerer. In the No. 5 tilt, UAB's Nugent recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win against Natalia Parrado. At the No. 6 position, Blazer Samrin Tanzeem defeated Ulrich, 6-1, 6-2.
Southern Miss tallied wins at two singles spots. In the No. 3 match, Blazer Elsholz fell to Narra, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, while UAB's Esen was beat by Blackett, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 4 slot.
UAB wraps up the regular season Saturday by hosting Middle Tennessee at Brook Highland Racquet Club at 11 a.m.
