UAB Wins Pair of Matches at Sheraton New Orleans Classic

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The UAB volleyball team began play at the Sheraton New Orleans Volleyball Classic on Friday, winning both matches by a 3-0 count to improve to 9-3 on the year. The Blazers began the day by beating Alcorn State (30-20, 30-12, 30-10) before shutting out Centenary (30-22, 30-19, 30-26) in match two.
Against Alcorn State, sophomore outside hitter Aleksandra Vujovic and junior middle blocker Angie Ping each had a team-high eight kills in the contest with Vujovic hitting .800 in two games played to go along with three aces. Freshman setter Aley Tallman had a standout performance as well, leading the team with 13 assists to go along with five digs and three kills.
Another freshman making a great impact in UAB's win over Alcorn State was middle blocker Andrea Lalic who had four kills and four block assists. Sophomore setter Nevena Stefanov played in the opening game of the match and had nine assists.
In the team's second match of the day against Centenary, sophomore outside hitter Ivana Bozic led the way with her sixth double-double of the season finishing with 11 kills and 14 digs. Vujovic again had a strong showing for the Blazers with 11 kills and 11 digs, while junior outside hitter Fernanda Domingos had nine kills, six digs and five service aces. Junior middle blocker Casey Dent also finished in double-figures in kills with 11 on a .526 hitting performance.
Stefanov led the team in assists with 36, while defensively, junior libero Brianna Galvin had a match-high 18 digs.
UAB will resume play at the Sheraton New Orleans Volleyball Classic on Saturday when it takes on Northwestern State at 2:30 p.m. before going up against host New Orleans at 7:00 p.m.
