Blazers Finish Third at Birmingham Tri-Match

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's golf team opened its 2006 fall season on Monday, competing in the Birmingham Tri-Match at Bent Brook Golf Course in McCalla, Ala. The one-day, three-team event featured local schools UAB, Samford and host-school Birmingham Southern. The Blazers finished third overall with a combined scored of 630 over two rounds of play.
Birmingham Southern took first place at its home event with a team total of 587. Samford shot a 620 to secure a second-place finish.
Senior Jennifer Head led the Blazers with a two-round total of 153, which tied her for the fourth-best total of the tournament. Sophomore transfer Alyson Mitchell, who played her freshman season at Birmingham Southern, brought in the second-best total of the day for the Blazers, shooting a 154. Mitchell also shot a team-best 74 during the second round.
Senior Martha Hudson recorded rounds of 80 and 82 to help UAB's endeavor with a total of 162. Sophomore Christina Wentworth and freshman Carolyn Cochran tallied identical scores of 164 to round of UAB's team effort.
The Blazers encountered inclement weather off-and-on throughout the day, causing multiple rain delays during the tournament.
UAB will be back in action on Monday, September 25 when the Blazers make the trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. to compete in the Unlimited Potential/Myrtle Beach Classic. The two-day event is hosted by the College of Charleston.
