Blazers Finish Homestand With 3-1 Victory Over Mercer

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB volleyball team earned a 3-1 (30-18, 30-15, 28-30, 30-20) victory over Mercer in Bartow Arena Tuesday night to run its home winning streak to 10 matches. The Blazers are now 14-6 on the year, while Mercer falls to 5-14 with the loss.
Senior Fernanda Domingos led the Blazers with 16 kills on .462 hitting, in addition to serving five aces. Junior Ivana Bozic was strong for the Blazers as well, finishing with her 13th double-double of the season with 15 kills and a match-high 18 digs.
Sophomore Andrea Lalic set a career-high in kills for the second straight match as she finished with 12 after hitting .357 for the match.
"I thought we did some good things tonight," said UAB head coach Kerry Messersmith. "We still lost our focused for a little bit there in the third game but all-in-all I think we played pretty well. I'm especially impressed with Andrea and how well she has played the last week or so."
Junior setter Nevena Stefanov, who set a career-high with 77 assists against the Bears earlier this season, finished with 56 assists in helping the Blazers hit an impressive .333 for the match. Stefanov also contributed with four service aces and nine digs.
Senior Shaniquwa Cooper and junior Lilly Domingos were each active in the Blazer offense Tuesday night as well as both finished with nine kills, while Lilly also made a match-high five total blocks.
Senior Brianna Galvin finished with 15 digs and freshman Emily Foreman totaled four digs to aid the Blazers defensively.
Mercer's offensive production was highlighted by Jen Darty's 14 kills on .314 hitting. Libby Hansch finished with 12 kills on .391 hitting and Julie Darty posted double-figures in kills as well with 10.
Kelly Jansen dished out 38 assists on a night the Bears were held to .152 hitting.
The Blazers now take to the road as they travel to play in their second televised match of the season at Marshall on Friday at 6:00 p.m. CT.
