Men's Soccer Falls At No. 7 Tulsa, 2-0

TULSA, Okla. ----- The UAB men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision at No. 7 Tulsa in the regular-season finale for both teams. As a result, the Blazers will be the No. 8 seed in the 2007 Conference USA Championship, and will host a rematch with the Golden Hurricane in the opening round of the event. Tulsa clinched the league championship with the victory over the Blazers.
UAB will be the host of the 2007 C-USA Championship, and will play the rematch on West Campus Field at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14. Despite Friday night's loss, the Blazers remain on a high streak entering tournament play, capturing wins in two of their last three contests of the season. UAB finished the campaign with a 7-10-1 overall record, and a 2-6 mark in league play, while the Golden Hurricane closed at 12-2-2 overall and 6-0-2 in conference.
The Golden Hurricane scored two goals in the opening 22 minutes of play and held the Blazers off for the win. Tulsa wasted no time getting on the board when it broke through in the eighth minute of play. Tulsa's Eric Burkholder served a cross that was finished by Zach Nulisch to give his team an early one goal lead.
Just over 14 minutes later, the Golden Hurricane made it 2-0 when Eric DeFreitas found Chris Taylor off a free kick. Taylor then deposited the ball into the back of the net, past UAB's Wes Johnson for the two-goal advantage just 22 minutes into the contest.
UAB finished the contest with 12 shots on the night, seven of which came on goal. Johnson made six saves in the opening 45 minutes, while freshman Carl Woszcynski played the second half and had three stops. Tulsa's Dominic Cervi preserved his eighth shutout of the 2007 campaign, making six saves in the contest.
The Conference USA Championship will be held on UAB's West Campus Field on Nov. 14-18. Four games will be played on Wednesday's opening round, capped by the Blazers and Golden Hurricane at 8 p.m. The championship's semifinal will be on Friday, followed by the championship match, will be broadcast live on national television, will be played Sunday.
