AUBURN, Ala. -- The Blazers' bats were as cold as the temperature at the Auburn Tiger Invitational on Saturday morning, as UAB (3-4) mustered just three hits in a 10-0 loss to the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles (3-4) on a chilly day at Jane B. Moore field. Tech pitcher Bonnie Bynum dominated on both sides of the ball, tossing the complete-game shutout and going 2-for-2 with three RBI.
The Blazers took an aggressive approach in the first inning. Holly Krzan singled and Andrea Rogers followed with a double. Krzan headed for home on Rogers' hit, but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
UAB pitcher Brittany Hodge held the Tennessee Tech to one hit through the first two innings before the Golden Eagles blew the game open with a seven-run third. Beth Boden led off the inning with a single and Krystina Dobbs followed with a two-run blast to give the Tennessee Tech a 2-0 lead. The Golden Eagles followed with three consecutive hits to put two more runs on the board. After Kristyn Castonzo smacked an RBI double, Boden slapped another single to plate two runs.
The Golden Eagles struck again in the fourth, this time with back-to-back homeruns from Stephanie Fischer and Bynum. With Tennessee Tech leading 10-0, the game was called in the fifth on account of the eight-run-rule.
Bynum (2-2) picked up her second win over the Blazers in as many weeks. Hodge (1-1) was roughed up for seven runs on eight hits. Amanda Antonovich and Kayla Harris each pitched two-third of an inning and combined to give up three runs on five hits.
UAB will face Virginia Tech at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Hokies (5-1) will play Auburn on Saturday afternoon before taking on UAB. The Blazers handed the Hokies their only loss last weekend at the Georgia State First Pitch Classic.
