BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's tennis team defeated Birmingham-Southern, 6-1, Monday afternoon at the BSC courts. Junior Gulsah Esen led the Blazers with victories at both No. 1 singles and doubles. The Blazers are now 3-0 on the year, while the Panthers fall to 3-2.
"Birmingham-Southern was a much improved team from the past couple of years," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "The match was closer that the final score indicates. I thought that Gulsah and Nischa (Maier-Knapp) made a strong comeback with a solid performance after losing their previous match."
UAB won the doubles point after earning wins at the No. 1 and 3 positions. Esen and junior Nischa Maier-Knapp won 8-1 at No. 1 and Julia von Samson and junior Seden Soyalp were victorious at No. 3, 8-4.
Esen earned a straight sets victory at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-4, while von Samson pulled off a come-from-behind victory at No. 2, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3. At number three, senior Annemieke Elsholz won 6-4, 7-6, however freshman Magdalena Czernik lost in three sets at No. 4.
